James 4:1-3--What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires (he-doNO-N) that battle within you?
2
You desire (epithyMEIte) but do not have, so you kill. You covet (ze-LOUte), but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.
3
When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives (kaKO-S), that you may spend what you get on your pleasures (he-doNAIS). (NIV)
Alt.:--come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ... ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. (KJV)
Alt.:--Do you know where your fights [conflicts; wars] and arguments [disputes; quarrels; battles] come from? They come from the selfish desires [cravings] that war within you [in your members; probably parts of the body, but could be members of the church]. You want [desire] things, but you do not [or cannot] have them. So you are ready to kill [murder] and are jealous [envious] of other people, but you still cannot get what you want. (EXB)
Alt.:--Can’t you see that they arise from conflicting passions within yourselves? You crave for something and don’t get it, you are jealous and envious of what others have got and you don’t possess it yourselves. Consequently in your exasperated frustration you struggle and fight with one another. (Phillips)
Alt.:--Do they not arise from your sensual desires that are ever warring in your bodily members? You are jealous and covet [what others have] and your desires go unfulfilled; [so] you become murderers. [To hate is to murder as far as your hearts are concerned.] You burn with envy and anger and are not able to obtain [the gratification, the contentment, and the happiness that you seek], so you fight and war. ... you ask with wrong purpose and evil, selfish motives. Your intention is [when you get what you desire] to spend it in sensual pleasures. (AMP)
Alt.:--Are they not hence, from your concupiscences, which war in your members? You covet, and have not: you kill, and envy, and can not obtain. ... that you may consume it on your concupiscences. (Rhe)
Alt.:--Isn’t it because there is a whole army of evil desires within you? You want what you don’t have, so you kill to get it. You long for what others have, and can’t afford it, so you start a fight to take it away from them. ... your whole aim is wrong -- you want only what will give you pleasure. (LB)
Revelation 3:19--Those whom I love (phiLO-) I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest (ZE-leue) and repent (metaNOe-son). (NIV)
Alt.:--I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference. (NLT)
Alt.:--Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. (ESV)
Alt.:--So be committed and repent. (HCSB)
Alt.:--so be serious and repent! (ISV)
Alt.:--Take this seriously, and change the way you think and act. (GWT)
Alt.:--As many as I love, I do convict and chasten; be zealous, then, and reform (YLT)
Alt.:--The people I love, I call to account—prod and correct and guide so that they’ll live at their best. Up on your feet, then! About face! Run after God! (Mes)
Alt.:--Those whom I [dearly and tenderly] love, I tell their faults and convict and convince and reprove and chasten [I discipline and instruct them]. So be enthusiastic and in earnest and burning with zeal and repent [changing your mind and attitude]. (AMP)
Alt.:--"I correct [rebuke] and punish [discipline] those whom I love. So be eager to do right [zealous; earnest], and change your hearts and lives [repent]." (EXB)
Alt.:--"I correct and punish the people I love. So show that nothing is more important to you than living right. Change your hearts and lives." (ERV)
