2 Corinthians 7:7-10--And not only by his coming but also by the comfort (te- paraKLE-sei) with which he was comforted in you, as he told us of your longing (epiPOthe-sin), your mourning (odyrMON), your zeal (ZE-Lon) for me, so that I rejoiced (chaRE-nai) still more.
8
For even if I made you sorry (eLYpe-sa) with my letter, I do not regret it (though I did regret it), for I see that that letter grieved (eLYpe-sen) you, though only for a while.
9
As it is, I rejoice (CHAIro-), not because you were grieved (elyPE-the-te), but because you were grieved into repenting (elyPE-the-te eis meTAnoian) ; for you felt a godly grief (elyPE-the-te gar kaTA theON), so that you suffered no loss through us.
10
For godly grief (kaTA theON LYpe-) produces a repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret, but worldly grief (tou KOSmou LYpe-) produces death. (RSV)
Alt.:--He told us how much you longed for me. He told us about your deep sadness and concern for me. That made my joy greater than ever. ... Now I am happy. I’m not happy because you were made sad. I’m happy because your sadness led you to turn away from your sins. ...Godly sadness causes us to turn away from our sins and be saved. (NIRV)
Alt.:--When he told me how much you were looking forward to my visit, and how sorry you were about what had happened, and about your loyalty and warm love for me, well, I overflowed with joy! (LB)
Alt.:--he could tell us of your eagerness to help, your deep sympathy and keen interest on my behalf. All that made me doubly glad to see him. ... now I am glad I sent it, not because I want to hurt you but because it made you grieve for things that were wrong. ... The sorrow which God uses means a change of heart and leads to salvation--it is the world’s sorrow that is such a deadly thing. (Phillips)
Alt.:--and how eagerly you took my part, so that I rejoiced still more. ... Yet I am glad now, not because you were pained, ... For godly grief and the pain God is permitted to direct, produce a repentance that leads and contributes to salvation and deliverance from evil, and it never brings regret; but worldly grief (the hopeless sorrow that is characteristic of the pagan world) is deadly [breeding and ending in death]. (AMP)
Alt.:--your kanous (zeal) for me, so that it caused me to have even more simcha. ... Now I have simcha, not that you had agmat nefesh, but that your grief brought you to teshuva (OJB)
Alt.:--I went from worry to tranquility in no time! ... Now I’m glad--not that you were upset, but that you were jarred into turning things around. You let the distress bring you to God, not drive you from him. ... Distress that drives us to God does that. It turns us around. (Mes)
Alt.:--When I heard this, I was much happier. ... I am happy because your sorrow made you change your hearts. ... Being sorry in the way God wants makes a person change his heart and life. (ICB)
Alt.:--As a result, I was more inclined to celebrate; ... Anyway, I’m celebrating now (NTE)
Alt.:--Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. (NKJV)
Alt.:--I now do rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye were made sorry to reformation, for ye were made sorry toward God (YLT)
Alt.:--but that you were grieved into repentance. For you were grieved in-accordance-with God (DLNT)
2 Thessalonians 2:9-12--The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders,
10 and with all unrighteous deception (aPAte- adiKIas) among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth (te-n aGApe-n te-s ale-THEIas), that they might be saved.
11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe (pisTEUsai) the lie,
12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe (pisTEUsantes) the truth (ale-THEIa) but had pleasure in (eudoKE-santes) unrighteousness (te- adiKIa). (NKJV)
Alt.:--The Anarchist's coming is all Satan’s work. All his power and signs and miracles are fake, evil sleight of hand that plays to the gallery of those who hate the truth that could save them. And since they’re so obsessed with evil, God rubs their noses in it--gives them what they want. Since they refuse to trust truth, they’re banished to their chosen world of lies and illusions. (Mes)
Alt.:--The lawless man is produced by the spirit of evil and armed with all the force, wonders and signs that falsehood can devise. To those involved in this dying world he will come with evil's undiluted power to deceive, for they have refused to love the truth which could have saved them. God sends upon them, therefore, the full force of evil's delusion, so that they put their faith in an utter fraud and meet the inevitable judgment of all who have refused to believe the truth and who have made evil their play-fellow. (Phillips)
Alt.:-- The Man of Evil will use every kind of evil to fool those who are lost. ... They will all be condemned ... because they enjoyed doing evil. (ERV)
Alt.:--And by unlimited seduction to evil and with all wicked deception ... God sends them a misleading influence (AMP)
Alt.:--and every kind of wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. ... God sends them a powerful delusion ... so that all who have not believed the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned. (NRSV)
Alt.:--and with all deception of iniquity working in those that perish because they did not receive the charity of the truth ... God shall send the operation of error in them, ... but consented to the iniquity. (JUB)
Alt.:--everyone will be judged who is not convinced by the truth but is happy with injustice. (CEB)
Alt.:--everyone who did not believe the truth, but was delighted with what God disapproves of (GWT)
Alt.:--all of them will be justly judged for believing falsehood, refusing the Truth, and enjoying their sins. (LB)
Alt.:--those who did not believe the truth but enjoyed unrighteousness. (HCSB)
Alt.:--but enjoyed doing [delighted in; approved of] evil [wickedness; unrighteousness; injustice]. (EXB)
